Mr Kieran Jefferson


MA(Cantab) BMBCh(Oxon) FRCS(Urol)





Mr Jefferson has been a consultant urological surgeon at the University Hospital of Coventry & Warwickshire since 2006. He trained in medicine at Cambridge and Oxford Universities, representing Oxford as an oarsman.  After house officer posts in Oxford and Poole, he taught anatomy at the University of Bristol.  He went on to complete his surgical and urological training in Bristol and the Southwestern Deanery.  In 1999 he achieved the highest mark in Europe for the European Board of Urology In-service Examination.


During his Higher Surgical Training he undertook a two year period of grant funded laboratory research examining the role of the insulin-like growth factor axis in the development of prostate cancer. After completing his training, he undertook a one year period of sub-specialist uro-oncology fellowship training at Southmead Hospital, Bristol to gain a comprehensive experience of complex open and laparoscopic urological surgery. Recently he has worked with Mr MacDonald to develop a robotic radical prostatectomy service for Coventry & Warwickshire.  He was admitted to the Specialist Register for Urology in 2006.


As well as a number of international presentations and published articles investigating aspects of nocturia, prostate cancer and bladder cancer, Mr Jefferson has written several book chapters on prostate and other urological cancers.  He is also co-author of Prostate Cancer: a comprehensive guide for patients.


In February 2014 Mr Jefferson and Mr MacDonald commenced a robotic radical prostatectomy service based at University Hopital Coventry, using a Da Vinci Si surgical robot.  To date they have performed more than 200 procedures and perform an average of 4 each week.  Results are prospectively audited locally and through the BAUS Cancer Registry and National Prostate Cancer Audit.



Mr Rajagopalan Sriram






Mr Sriram has been a consultant urological surgeon at University Hospital since 2002, having trained in urology in the West Midlands deanery and achieved specialist registration in 2001.


He obtained his primary MBBS degree from the University of Madras in 1984 and went on to obtain the Masters Degree in Surgery in 1988. He obtained the general Fellowship in Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1990. In 1994, he obtained the Diploma in Urology from the University of London before joining the West Midlands Urology training scheme. He was awarded the highest score in the European Board of Urology examination in 2001.


Mr Sriram's main specialist interests are urinary incontinence, bladder cancer, urology, neuro-urology and urodynamics.  He has published and presented papers in international journals ans meetings.  He is the lead clinician for continence services in urology and has extensive experience of the transobturator tape procedure for stress incontinence and the use of intravesical BOTOX.


Mr Sriram has trained many consultants to perform tape procedures and Botox injections. He is an educational supervisor for Warwick medical students and actively teaches the urology curriculum for the students. He also teaches in the CCrISP course at Coventry and at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is an examiner for the intermediate and Final MB Ch exams.







Mr Donald MacDonald

Mr MacDonald was educated at Cambridge where he won a senior scholarship at Caius College and Oxford where he won the John B Pearce Memorial Prize in Surgery.  After house jobs in Oxford and Leeds he returned to Cambridge to teach anatomy.  He completed his basic surgical training at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at the Hammersmith Hospital.


He spent 2 years at University College London developing a novel method for the diagnosis of bladder cancer for which he was awarded the Guy Baines Gold Medal. His higher urological training was completed in the West Midlands with additional training at the Urology and Nephrology Centre in Mansoura, Egypt. He is a member of the European Society of Oncological Urology mentorship scheme.


 He was appointed as consultant urological surgeon at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire in April 2012 with a special interest in prostate and bladder cancer.


Since his appointment he has introduced da Vinci Robotic radical prostatectomy, prostate mapping and orthotopic bladder reconstruction. His pioneering MRI-TRUS fusion service is a National Reference Centre 


As lead clinician for clinical governance he is committed to continuous monitoring and improvement of surgical outcomes. As deputy chair of the Arden Urology Network Site Specific Group he is responsible for the coordination of urological cancer services throughout Warwickshire.
